Robonaut 2 or R2 has started sending tweets from outer space. The human like robot is at the International Space Station helping the humans there with jobs both inside and outside. It’s twitter account is @astrobonaut and despite its early messages being sent by humans before it was woken up, it is now sending real messages such as answering questions and sending birthday greetings. The robot took 15 years to build using a joint project between NASA and General Motors.

The robot has a human look, with torso are arms and a helmet with visor on. It does not have legs but is attached to a fixed base. It will get a leg eventually for climbing through the corridors in the space station or it may be mounted on a wheeled rover called Centaur for exploring Lunar and Martian surfaces.

There are four robots like this on earth, but R2 is more sophisticated than these with a wider range of senses, more dexterity and an capability of being faster. It is there to show how robots can cope in a weightless environment but the hope it will do some space walks in the future. It will accompany humans so that it can do jobs that they cannot do.

Samsung has now got a court date where it will be challenging the ban on its European sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Apple had brought an injunction against the company and it plans to do the same thing in the Netherlands as well, which is not covered by the European ban that it currently has in place.

At the moment it is banned from promoting, selling or importing the tablet across most of Europe but it will appear in court to put a stop to this. It is expected that within a few weeks of the court date a decision will be made as to whether the ban can be lifted. At the moment some retailers do have the product because the injunction does not cover the sale by third parties.

In the Netherlands things are little more complicated because Apple claims that Samsung copied its design and then infringed specific patents. It claims that the touch screen and photo management software are both copyright infringements because they are so close to what Apple currently offers on its products. With Rotterdam being a key port for import of Samsung products to Europe the ruling in this country could be all the more significant.

Steve Jobs has quit as the boss of Apple. He resigned form the position after having a liver transplant following cancer of the pancreas and he has been on his third set of medical leave. He has been of work since January with an undisclosed condition He explained that he did not feel he could meet his duties. He will become the chairman of the firm and his position will be taken over by the chief operating officer, Tim Cook. Steve Jobs formed the company with Steve Wozniak in the 70′s and in the 80′s the macintosh computers became popular, he left in 1985 after a fall out with staff but rejoined in 1997 wh they made the colourful iMac and they have grown speedily ever since.

In his letter of resignation he said that he believed that Apple had its most innovative days ahead of it and that he looked forward to watching the company continue to grow. Despite shares falling, the resignation was said to not be unexpected and that it would not make a big difference to the running of the company as he has been on medical leave for so long an Tim Cook has already been covering his role. Customers are unlikely to see any difference as the products will remain the same. The company have plans to bring out the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3 in the future.

The government are considering whether to turn off access to social media in times of riots. The police, prime minister and intelligence services are in discussion to decide whether it is right and whether it is possible to turn off access to social media.

Blackberry Messenger and texting were thought to be used by some of the rioters. The Home Secretary will be meeting with representatives from the makers of Blackberry, Twitter and Facebook to discuss their obligations at times of unrest.

There has been criticism of this idea, people saying that it blocks their rights to freedom of speech. However, it has been used in other countries and been successful and so it is obviously possible and an effective tool.

Hopefully there will no need for it to ever happen again, as riots in England are scarce but as there is a lot of evidence that social networking did help riots to start and to spread, then it is not surprising that this form of action will be considered as a plan in case it happens in the future. There were also many rumours spreading on social media about riots which were not true, this caused problems in several areas and so could be a further argument for switching it off in troubled times.

The latest version of Mac OS X is Lion. It was release to the masses a just over two weeks ago, introducing a some excellent key features in the process. I have picked out some my 7 key features that i think will help you to get the most out of your Mac.

1. Autosave
This is an invaluable feature that automatically saves files every five minutes, I know what i’m like so this is great for me.

2. Launchpad
Apple has also brought the in the iPhone/iPad iOS interface to the Mac. This shows applications in icon format, providing a quick way of accessing applications that are not stored in the dock.

3. Resume
One of the things that makes me prefer Macs from PCs is the impressive boot time. Apple has now added a ‘Resume’ feature which means that the Mac will automatically re-open all apps that were being used in the last session.

4. Multi-user screen sharing

This feature has been greatly improved, it now enables remote log-in to a separate account on another Mac. Benefits include allowing IT admins to remotely troubleshoot problems and carry out upgrades without causing disruption.

5. Airdrop
This makes it possible to share files even when there is no Wi-Fi present. A Mac will automatically locate any other AirDrop-capable device within 30 feet and allow an encrypted file transfer between them. Fantastic with you iPad/iPhone and Apple TV.

6. Apple Mac App Store
This has been out since January, but the Mac App Store will prove a key feature for those using Apple’s portable devices. It’s possible to get key software from the App Store, including productivity apps, games etc. The importance of this store is only likely to increase as Apple puts more emphasis on cloud storage with the launch of iCloud.

7. Use swiping gestures with multiple desktops
This is probably my favourite new feature. The trackpad has been redefined, allowing a number of swiping gestures using two and three fingers. Scrolling and pinch-to-zoom are welcome features, and work remarkably well on the trackpad. There is also the three-fingered horizontal swipe that allows you to navigate between full screen applications. A great way to use this is to create multiple desktops, which you can then change between.

I am currently sitting on a train from Manchester to London Euston, everyone in view has a laptop open (bar a couple of people reading Heat magazine). We all want WiFi, quick, efficient, full access WiFi – oh yes, plus it should be free too.
The price of a the ticket for two adults (i’m travelling with a business associate) has cost us around £200. We happily paid for the inflated sandwiches, and the inflated coffee. We have given Virgin trains a good day out. My knees are knocking on every table stand, and my colleague’s arms are slowly falling across my side of the arm rest.

To labour the point, WE HAVE PAID FOR THIS.

But WiFi, which is advertised and promoted across every metre of the train with flashy stickers and “Full Access” emblazoned on them, is not mentioned as an additional cost. But blow me it costs £4 per hour. Which is what i spend at home for for an entire month.
Why does it cost this much? It wouldn’t cost that much to service the whole train per journey.
So i look across again at all the laptops. Like me it doesn’t seem like anyone is actually online. People refuse to pay this type of thing, especially, as like me they have already spent £200 for a quick trip to Manchester.
Virgin could make so much more out of this and be cleverer.

- Why don’t they make WiFI free on the Virgin train? That way they could sell advertising space to an increased audience. I want to use my iPhone on the train Wifi too – but no that is a separate charge.

- Why don’t they make it just a few pounds per month, that way many more people would pay for the service, that fundamentally has not real cost

- Why don’t Virgin make the only signifier to join the Wifi network to leave an email address, that way they could capture the data and partake in future marketing

- Or why not make the user LIke their Facebook page or something similar?

Paying through the nose is distasteful and I will be posting this when i am back home and in a Wifi network

There was a time when most of us would only buy a Nokia. “It doesn’t matter which mobile network you give me, as long as it’s a Nokia” Was what i would say in the Carphone Warehouse.

Then Vodafone got “wise” to this. They realised the handset ruled over the provider. That we didn’t actually need or even want them. So the mobile giants brought out their own functionality and interface. Thinking if they set the standard, then no mobile phone could rule over them. I left instantly.
That was then, this is now. Now Apple rule the roost in the functionality side of things, providers are a secondary option, and an offering simply based on cost now. It’s not how many text messages they sell you but the amount of data. That data is key for any Tablet you are about to purchase.
Question: Would you buy a Nokia tablet? Absolutely, but on one proviso, that it is better than everything out there. And when we say everything we ofcourse mean the iPad.
Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia has said as much about the iPad too.
“Our team right now is assessing what’s the right tablet strategy for Nokia—how does that fit in? I will tell you this that’s most important: There are now over 200 different tablets on the marketplace. Only one of them is doing really well. And my challenge to the team is: I don’t want to be the 201st tablet on the market that you can’t tell from all of the others.”
We like the way Nokia has kept its powder dry and waited for the market to mature. But if the Finish gaunt is going to produce a tablet that can compete with the iPad as well as beat all the other 200 tablets from LG, Samsung etc who have leapt on the bandwagon, what operating system are they going to use?
Stephen Elop responded:
“We have a number of options in the tablet computing space given the changing strategy that we have. For example, we could take advantage of Microsoft technology and software and build a Windows-oriented tablet, or we could do things with some of the other software assets that we have.
We’d love to see a Microsoft tablet on Nokia hardware. Nokia phones were in everyones pockets in the early 2000s, if they really do take on the tablet market, maybe everyone who is beginning to get sick of Apple will now place them in the briefcases too.
Stephen Elop went on, “We have to take a uniquely Nokia perspective, and so the teams are working very hard on something that would be differentiating relative to everything else that’s going on in the market.”
We will keep you updated on the Nokia Tablet – we personally can’t wait and though there may not be 1000s of people queuing for it all the way round the block, like the freaks that purchase Apple products, we most certainly will be camping out in Helsinki for the launch.

The beautiful little Flip Cam was, just a couple of years ago, the must-have handheld technology and owned 17% share of the camcorder market. But Flip is now being killed off by owners Cisco, with the loss of 550 jobs, due to lack of profits and too much competition in the Smartphone market.

Cisco Systems the networking and router company is shutting down the consumer-oriented Flip camera business that it bought for $590m in 2009. The move will mean the loss of 550 jobs worldwide, cost Cisco $300m – and disappoint thousands of users who had enjoyed the devices’ simplicity.

The close-down which was announced at Cisco Headquarters on Tuesda as part of a widespread reorganisation of the corporation as it attempts to rejig its business. Cisco will now reorganise its remaining consumer businesses to support its existing “key priorities” – notably the routers and switches in the IP Telephony market that generate the majority of its sales.

Though Cisco never broke out revenues from the Flip division, they are believed to be small: its latest accounts show that “other products” – understood to include its Linksys routers and Flip cameras – generated revenues of just $211m in the most recent quarter, down from $229m the previous quarter. Profits or losses for the division were not disclosed. With no apparent buyers it suggests that the stand-alone movie camera business is effectively dead – despite just a few years ago being highly desirable and cost effective times.

This sudden demise is put squarely at the doors of the smartphones such as the Android HTC and iPhone4 which are capable of shooting high-definition video (HD Video) and have seen vast increases in sales in the past 18 months – the exact time that the company was being transferred to Cisco. This is ironic in itself as Cisco know a lot more about phones than most companies out there. So maybe this move to the consumer high-street camcorder market was a step too far for them.
The Flip camera, originally made by Pure Digital Technologies, burst to prominence with its sleek looks and ultra-easy usability, in September 2007, before the widespread penetration of smartphones took hold of the market.

The Rise of the Smartphone Market

In 2007 only 80m smartphones were sold – but that rose to 304m out of the 1.6bn phones sold in 2010, a huge increase. By contrast, Flip had sold 2m of its cameras by January 2009. Yet it was one of the most popular stand-alone camcorders on sale online and in stores, and by 2008 it was estimated to have a 17% share of the $2.4bn camcorder market – behind only Sony, with 21%. But Sony held on to its lead and seems to have extended it in 2010 as the low-end market was eaten by mobile phones with video capability.

Future for Video at Cisco

Maybe we will see some HD technology in our Cisco Phones on our desktops? Or more video technology in relationship to Unified communications and Fixed Mobile Convergence, an area where Cisco is the leading supplier and market innovators.

The movie industry is advancing and evolving all the time with the technology it offers us. At Digital technology Centre we are big fans of movies and the technology that revolves around them. We came across this site allsubs.org which is unique in the fact that it has the largest collection of movie subtitles in the world. Subtitling is one of the oldest aspects of films and is something we are all used to.
But without many people would not be able to enjoy a vast amount of films. Allsubs.org is a very nifty site for anyone interested in viewing movies made in a foreign language.

So we want to have a quick look at the history of Subtitling.

The First Subtitles in Movies

The film industry was built on subtitling. It was not long after the invention of film that efforts were first made to convey the dialogue of the actors to the audience. They started with what we now call intertitles or subtitles: texts, drawn or printed on paper, filmed and placed between sequences of the film. They were first seen in 1903 as epic, descriptive titles in Edwin S. Porter’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

In the era of intertitles, it was easy to solve the translation problem. The original titles were removed, translated, filmed and re-inserted. Or a speaker was used to give a simultaneous interpretation of the intertitles.
In fact, the very first “subtitles” in the modern sense saw the light of day already during the silent film era. In 1909 M. N. Topp registered a patent for a “device for the rapid showing of titles for moving pictures other than those on the film strip”. With this method the projectionist, using a sciopticon (a kind of slide projector), showed the subtitles on the screen below the intertitles. However, this was never much more than a curiosity, although similar techniques, with the titles on a film strip instead of slides, have been used from time to time up to the present day (Brant, p. 30).

Countries that have a Film Subtitle Policy

Subtitles (with Dubbing only for Children) – UK, Portugal, Scandinavia, Balkans, Greece.

Dubbing Policy – Central Europe including Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Austria and Switzerland.

So does this have a major impact on culture and the general ability to speak foreign languages? Well in Greece, Portugal and obviously the Scndinavian countries, English is spoken well by the masses. However in Spain, France and Italy it is not. Though the two anomalies here are the UK, where we are relatively awful at speaking foreign languages. However we rarely have subtitled films on on mainstream TV. And Germany who has a rampant dubbing policy but are very good linguists, again it is possibly just down to taste.

Germany Pro-Dubbing Policy in Movies

Germany has a long tradition of dubbing Hollywood and other non-German movies into their language. It is just the way it is in Germany, either due to a protection of the language and culture, a long-running appetite by the German audience for the dubbing of films, or an intolerance by the movie makers to change the .
There is an entire industry built around dubbing or synchronisation for foreign speaking films and TV series. Many German voice actors (Synchronsprecher) are unknown to the general public except when they speak the parts of actors and stars in American and other movies. German moviegoers are used to hearing Sandra Bullock or Sean Connery speaking fluent German — with someone else’s voice.
Anyway check out Allsubs.org – a pleasure to use.
